Rural or rustic garden style

The countryside is best environment for genuine rural gardens or rustic gardens. Name “rural garden” suggests garden style that has evolved on farms. Farms had vegetable and flower garden near the house that served the household with fresh vegetables and herbs. Speciality of rural garden style is that the greater part of the garden is dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables, fruits and herbs. Important role have flowering plants, especially perennials. Thus, in rural garden we obtain a rich blend of fragrances and colours that are intertwined in harmony. Vegetables and herbs play a major role at garden's image, so we create beds with vegetables and herbs that have also ornamental role.

The primary purpose of rural garden is to provide household with fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits. Rustic garden is basically a very old form of the garden. It has appeared with the Romans and spread throughout Europe. Unique impact on rural gardens had monastery gardens in Middle Ages, where the rustic garden got more formal design.

A real rural garden consists of a vegetable garden surrounded by ornamental plants (shrubs, trees, perennials). Fruit garden is basically not part of the garden, because the farm should have orchard on separate location. If we do not live on a farm, we can plant a few fruit trees. Vegetable garden is usually in the square, round or oval form, where four large beds are separated by paths in the form of a cross. In the centre is a fountain, sundial or small tree. Beds are symmetrically shaped. Their size depends on available space. On them we plant different vegetables, herbs and perennials. Make sure that you regularly rotate crops. Real rustic garden is at the same time also organic garden. Special attention should be paid to the soil, which should be of high quality and every year fertilized with compost.

An integral part of rural garden is also a composter. Place it on the edge of the garden and somehow mask it with shrubs or herbaceous perennials and high grasses.

Paths in a rustic garden should be natural-looking. Most often they are created in the lawn. We can create them out of bark or just walk on the grass.

Rural gardens are fenced. Fence is to prevent wildlife to get to vegetables and fruits. The proper fence is 1 to 1,5 meters tall wooden fence, which will nicely fit into the rural landscape. Meter and a half tall fence already provides wind protection. Variety of perennials can be planted along fence.
